Winner of the 2008 Wastewater Plant of the Year Award from Illinois Rural Water Association.
The Wastewater Plant, built in 2002, treats approximately 600,000 gallons per day, on a dry day. The plant removes approximately 750 pounds of solids and organics a day. There are 6 lift stations transferring wastewater from outskirt neighborhoods to the wastewater plant. There is approximately 40 miles of water and sewer lines in Coal City. The water/wastewater operators include John Huddlestun and Tyler Valiente.
Help your village save maintenance costs by not flushing or disposing of the following down the drains:
Grease (especially at Thanksgiving)
These products plug lines and pumps that interrupt service and cost the village thousands of dollars in time and chemicals to clean these products out of our wastewater system.
Disconnect your sump pump from the wastewater system!
Residences that have sump pumps that pump their storm water into the wastewater system increase the amount of water that must be processed through our system. This increases the cost of our department, overloads our system and ultimately raises the cost to the village residents. When heavy rains fall in our community the sanitary system is over loaded and forces water into basements of your neighbors and other local residences.
The Village has determined that the Village wastewater treatment plant cannot handle the influx of clear water that is being illegally discharged into the public sanitary sewer system, causing sewer backup and other problems. Ordinance 08-12 established the Sump Pump Inspection Program. This ordinance is intended to reduce the volume of clear water that is being directed into the sanitary sewer system. The Program will involve the inspection of every building, structure, and facility in the Village to determine whether a sump pump is discharging water into the sanitary sewer system in violation of Village ordinances 51.054. Every person owning property that discharges into the Village’s sanitary sewer system shall allow the Village building official or a designated representative to inspect the building, structure, or facility to confirm that there is no sump pump or other prohibited discharge into the sanitary sewer system. Inspections conducted by the Village will be at no cost to the property owner.
In lieu of a Village inspection, a person may hire an Illinois licensed plumber (at his or her own expense) who is pre-registered with the Village of Coal City to conduct the required sump pump inspection. Proper forms must be completed by the plumber and submitted to the Village within seven days of the inspection.
Any property owner determined to be in violation of Village ordinance, regulation, or policy concerning the discharge of clear water into the public sanitary sewer system shall take immediate action to bring the property into compliance, including removal of the sump pump connection to the public sanitary sewer system. In addition, the property owner shall contact the building official for a re-inspection of the property within 60 days of the initial inspection.

The Village of Coal City gets their water from four wells. The first well, Well 3 with a depth of 360 feet has a small amount of sulfur. Well 4 with a depth of 793 feet also has sulfur. Well 5 with a depth of 1785 feet, has no sulfur but contains high amounts of radium. Well 6 also contains sulfur with a depth of 580 feet.
The Water Plant, built in 1991, was designed to remove the hardness, sulfur, and radium from the wells. The water plant produces about 600,000 gallons a day of 3 to 5 grains of soft water.
